Ora reads retail shelves, store by store, every morning. This is every PetSmart in North America.

The numbers

There are 1,699 PetSmart stores across the United States and Canada: 1,534 in the US, 165 in Canada. The catalog lists 38,814 products.

Ora read each shelf available online: 41,932,692 store-by-item records, 20,391,944 of which are in stock.

Same catalog, different shelves

The median store has 12,539 items in stock. The deepest shelf in the chain is North Sacramento, CA with 13,946. The thinnest is Secaucus, NJ with 1,732.

The shelves also hold 23,721 items the online catalog no longer lists: stock that sits in stores but is invisible to anyone shopping the website. That gap between the website and the shelf is the point.
