What a first review means

A first Google review is one signal of a new opening. It is also the last one to show up. Before the first review exists, a restaurant has already filed government paperwork like sales tax permits, passed health inspections, built a website, created social profiles, signed up with delivery partners, gotten articles written about it, and registered its listing on Google Places.

We track 7 signals. The first review is the latest of the 7. By the time a restaurant receives its first review, it has already opened its doors.

Edge cases

A first review does not always mean a new opening. We hand-audited the Austin rows in this issue; 3 were listing artifacts rather than new restaurants: a burger brand that had been serving for months inside a bar and only created its own Google listing in June, an established farmers market vendor whose new pin sits at the market organizer's office, and a food truck park that got its own listing long after its vendors started serving. Expect a few rows like that in any issue.

Every row still passes the same check: its oldest Google review falls inside the issue month. Anyone can verify any row on Google Maps with one click.
