US Retail Ecommerce Stack
Ora checked 500 US retail stores drawn at random from a list of about 23,000 independent and mid-market stores. For each one, it answered four questions: is it open, does it have its own website, does it sell online, and on what platform?
The numbers
264 open stores have their own website. 136 of them sell merchandise online with their own cart and checkout.
Another 25 list their products online but cannot take an order. Where prices show, the button asks for a quote, a phone call, or a visit to the store. We count them as not selling online.
Shopify runs 37 of the 136 stores that sell online. WooCommerce runs 14. The rest spread across 31 other platforms and 18 custom builds.
Apparel and flower shops sell online the most. Auto shops sell online the least: 5 of 37 open stores.
| Platform | Stores | Share of stores selling online |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | 37 | 27.2% |
| Custom build | 18 | 13.2% |
| WooCommerce | 14 | 10.3% |
| Salesforce Commerce Cloud | 8 | 5.9% |
| Lightspeed (Ecwid) | 6 | 4.4% |
| Flower Shop Network | 5 | 3.7% |
| Teleflora | 5 | 3.7% |
| 27 other platforms | 43 | 31.6% |
