Ora read all 614,323 records in the UK food hygiene register. In the twelve months to October 20, 2026, 30,965 restaurants, takeaways, and pubs registered with their councils, 2,580 a month.
The numbers
Every food business in the UK registers before it trades, and a new owner registers again. That makes the register a monthly list of openings and changes of hands.
18,676 of the registrations were restaurants and cafes, 8,910 takeaways, and 3,379 pubs and bars.
The backlog
17,540 restaurants, takeaways, and pubs are registered and still waiting for a first inspection. 6,989 of them registered in the last three months. 3,257 have waited more than two years.
